I am having so much fun doing Christmas projects for “Christmas In August”.  Most of you are probably not thinking about Christmas just yet but I am noticing that retailers certainly are with sales, “Christmas in July” and pre-Christmas sections in craft catalogues.  I just received an e-mail from “The Christmas Imaginarium” and am certainly going to look at the catalogue and most likely do some Christmas shopping.  I love the things in that shop!  Anyway, I’m getting a little sidetracked so here we go with step-by-step directions for my next project – a cute wooden bookmark:

  • Paint the entire bookmark, back, front and sides with Dark Green (2 coats). Let it dry thoroughly.
  • Use the candle to rub wax over the entire bookmark.
  • Paint over the wax with white. I did two coats on the back and one on the front.
  • Carefully tear three vertical candies out of the napkin and separate the layers.
  • Decide where you would like to place the napkin piece (refer to photo) and starting at the top, apply some mix media glue to the bookmark. Gently lay the napkin piece onto the glue and paint glue over the top.
  • Continue doing this a little at a time until the napkin is completely glued down.
  • Let dry!
  • Use your coarse sandpaper to sand off some of the white paint here and there to create an aged, distressed look.
  • Using your #5 round brush and Dark Green paint, shade around the candies, across the top and bottom of the bookmark and down both sides. Please refer to the YouTube (https://youtu.be/3M-bg0WeOpQ) if you would like to see this process being done.
  • Use a toothpick or liner brush to put Aleene’s glue onto the very thin red and green stripes on the candy. Sprinkle with red or green glitter (do one colour at a time, you don’t want them mixing).  Tap off excess glitter and return it to the jar.  Brush off any stray glitter from the bookmark.
  • Paint on the Craft Twinkles glitter paint onto the white parts of the candy.
  • Let dry!
  • Varnish with DecoArt Triple Thick varnish and let dry.
  • Cut some lengths of ribbon for the tassel and attach to the top of the bookmark.

Well ladies and gents – that’s my second “Christmas In August” project completed.  I am going to make a few more bookmarks and add them to gifts or to Gift Cards, put them in stocking or use them as an ad-on with novels or recipe books.  Join me in creating these fun little gifts and have a fun crafting day.  Remember to “try it, you’ll love it”!
