I’m back! I was just about to begin my blog about this lovely vintage coaster when it occurred to me that you might be wondering why I blog when I could do a YouTube video instead. Well, I am getting to that but I’m not quite brave enough yet – working on it though. In the meantime, follow along and make a set for yourself, a friend, or a teacher – you name it. The first step is to paint the coaster with two coats of Avocado. Carefully tear around the roses on the napkin and separate the layers. Place the roses on the coaster, finding a position that you like and lightly trace around them. When you paint on the Weathered Wood, don’t go over your tracing lines. Brush on one even coat in the areas where you would like to see cracks. Dry for approximately 60 minutes and then apply one coat of white paint over the entire coaster, being careful not to overstroke on the Weathered Wood areas. The cracks should appear quickly.
Glue your napkin with you mixed media glue onto the area that has no cracks. First, working in 2 or 3 small sections at a time using a brush, add some glue to the coaster surface. Place the napkin down and add a little glue over top of the napkin (only where you’ve glued the napkin down). Continue working in small sections like this until your whole napkin is glued down with a layer of glue on top. Once dry, use your sponge dabber and slightly thinned (with water) Avocado paint to shade around the roses, dabbing the colour out onto the white background paint.
It helps to moisten the shading area with water first (no puddles). Continue to do this around the outside edges and in the corners. Apply one coat of glazing medium to entire coaster. Once dry, paint Avocado paint onto your stamp and stamp here and there around the coaster.
The glazing medium will allow you to wipe off and re-stamp if you aren’t happy with the look. Don’t wait too long through. Varnish with 2 or 3 coats of DecoArt Triple Thick Varnish. Glue a cork piece onto the bottom of the coaster to prevent sliding or scratching of furniture.
Your very vintage look coaster is finished, and you only have 2 or 3 more to go, LOL!
